So is Our Understanding of Fire
35 years ago I attended one of most respected fire schools on the east coast of the USA. They taught us about the triangle of fire: Heat, Fuel, Oxygen. A few years later, we were learning first hand about the "Tetrahedral Fire". Suddenly, we never entered a burning structure without an air pack and proper gear.
I watched a fireman in our company strike the front door of a fully involved house fire with his axe, moments later he was blown out of the doorway by the refrigerator at the back of the house as it was thrown from the house by the force of the implosion and subsequent explosion of the house as the newly provided oxygen ignited the smoldering embers and gases.
Welcome to a new world. One week later we were in class learning about how as a fire starves for oxygen it begins to feed on its own smoke (hot unburned gases). If the fire finds or makes a hole to the outside it will suddenly and often violently explode in a rush of flame and pressure.
