We have nothing against pets, it is important to understand the variables involved in human-predator encounters.
The “early warning” by a barking dog could also exponentially increase the odds of having that encounter in the first place.
Please be kind to your dog. More dogs than humans are affected by tick, chigger and snake bites than humans every year. Imagine how traumatic it would be for you and your beloved dog if it was routing about and you see it bitten possibly multiple times by a timber rattler snake. If you attempt to retrieve your bitten pet you may yourself be bitten.
Unless you have a trained Herding, Hunting or Work/Rescue Dog, please be kind leave your dog behind. If it is not bred and trained for the wilderness environment your dog is at risk of permanent injury, death and could cause you serious problems too. Check out the list and decriptions on the AKC website click the button on the right.
Please be thoughtful of those around you when you are on the trail with your pet. Remember that others on the trail may not be used to dogs and might be afraid of them. take in to consideration leash laws a must this protects you if your dog bites some child, if a loose dog bites you.Don’t let them play in the water, remember other hikers may be drawing their drinking water from the same body of water downstream. Protect your dog from injury, attack and worse.
Most pet dogs do not belong in the wild. They are domesticated and are ill equipped to protect themselves. Clipped claws, collars, leashes, dog wash with scents; these things make your pet domesticated. When you are on the trail, hiking, camping, etc your pet requires lots of attention. Pets are domesticated animals, they do not grow up in the wild. They are not accustomed to predators and how to steer away from them, be stealthy around them or how to fight back or kill them in the event of an attack. The only result of having your pet on the trail with you will be a sad funeral and an increased likelihood of you having a close encounter with a predator.
