Habit as Part of the Human Condition
In James' book he provides solid theories and supporting data from extensive research of human life and interactions regarding instincts, habits and the human condition. Nearly every point that he makes (in 1890) is totally relevent and useful when dealing with today's challenges and especially in understanding and helping people survive disasters and extreme situations.
Understanding how the human mind functions in relation to the perpensities, experiences, and habits acts as a master key to unlocking the potential of how people make decisions that are often negative for themselves. Such clues and insights allow us to help ourselves and others "course correct" and move in a better direction for our health, safety and happiness.

William James; the father of American Psychology grappled with the human psyche and it propensities in relation to life, survival, religion and life after death. In Jame’s book: The Principles of Psychology (1890), he posited a series of ideas that have serious and valuable importance in the understanding of how humans are driven psychologically and we can simply draw some very important points that can increase our ability to survive dire circumstances.
Return to Routine and You Will Survive
Your goal should be to reestablish some type of routine (norm) as soon as possible. While creating a disaster survival plan you should note the things that you do in your routine every day. I have found that it is the simple things that create a feeling of mental stability flowing over into your overall psyche. An example is if you start off you day with a cup of coffee, sit and watch the birds as you eat your breakfast, then include coffee, cups and other necessities to allow you to perform that morning ritual ASAP after bugging out.
Food and water play much more of role in your survival than most “experts” give credit to. They affect your psychological stability and depending upon your psyche can cause serious problems with their intake. There have been countless stories of people who had 30 days worth of food but could not bring themselves to eat it even when it meant starving to death which they did. So make sure that you pack what you will eat and not what someone told you is light weight or “survival food”.
Specialists around the world working with disaster victims and trauma have learned that the sooner that you return to basic routines the more rapid your recovery from disaster occurs. Many people start their day with coffee, the tv, news or other activities. Simply returning to those routines establishes a subconscious level of comfort and relaxation that fosters a healthy mentality when dealing with the day's challenges.
